China has established a new county named “Cenling” in its Xinjiang region near Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and the Afghanistan border, in an apparent move to strengthen security along the narrow Wakhan Corridor and curb infiltration of Uyghur separatist militants.
- About: Cenling will be administered under the Kashgar prefecture, a strategically significant region on the ancient Silk Road and a key gateway for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is opposed by India.
- This is the third new county established by China in Xinjiang after Hean and Hekang under Hotan prefecture, a move earlier protested by India as parts fall within its Union Territory of Ladakh, with Hean covering much of the disputed Aksai Chin plateau occupied by China since the 1962 war.
- India’s Response: India strongly rejected China’s actions, dismissing them as “mischievous attempts” to create “baseless narratives” by assigning “fictitious names” to territories, including Arunachal Pradesh, that rightfully belong to India.
County: A county is a territorial division and a unit of local government in some countries. Counties are usually made up of cities, towns, and rural populations. The functions of a county vary from country to country.
- In China, a county (xian) is a third-level administrative division under provinces and prefectures, serving as a key unit for local governance and implementation of state policies.
