Exam Pattern Overview
The UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages:
1. Preliminary Examination (Screening Test):
- Two objective-type papers (General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT))
- 200 marks each
- Duration: 2 hours each
- CSAT (GS Paper-II) is qualifying with minimum 33% marks
- Negative marking: For every incorrect answer, 1/3rd of the marks allotted to that question is deducted
2. Main Examination (Written + Interview)
- 9 papers of conventional essay type including two qualifying papers (English and Indian Language)
- Seven papers count toward merit (1750 marks total)
- Personality Test/Interview carries 275 marks
- Grand Total: 2025 marks
3. Interview/Personality Test
- Focus on the candidate’s mental alertness, balance of judgment, integrity, and leadership qualities.

Strategy for UPSC 2026 Preparation
1. Understand the Syllabus Thoroughly

GS Paper-I:
- History, Geography, and Social Issues
- History: Indian culture (art, literature, architecture from ancient to modern times), Modern Indian history (from the mid-18th century to present), Freedom Struggle, and post-independence consolidation.
- History of the world, that will include events from the 18th century such as industrial revolution, world wars, redrawal of national boundaries, colonization, decolonization, political philosophies like communism, capitalism, socialism etc.- their forms and effect on society.
- Geography: Physical, social, and economic geography of India and the world, natural resource distribution, geophysical phenomena like earthquakes and cyclones, changes in flora, fauna, and geographical features.
- Social Issues: Salient features of Indian society, social empowerment, role of women, poverty, developmental issues, urbanization, and the effects of globalization on Indian society.
- History: Indian culture (art, literature, architecture from ancient to modern times), Modern Indian history (from the mid-18th century to present), Freedom Struggle, and post-independence consolidation.
GS Paper-II:
- Polity, Governance, Social Justice, and International Relations
- Polity: Indian Constitution (evolution, features, amendments), federal structure, separation of powers, functioning of Parliament and State Legislatures, and the role of the Executive and Judiciary.
- Governance: Government policies for vulnerable sections, welfare schemes, transparency, accountability, e-governance, and citizen’s charters.
- Social Justice: Issues related to poverty, hunger, education, healthcare, and welfare schemes for marginalized groups.
- International Relations: India’s neighborhood relations, bilateral and global groupings, the impact of international policies on India, and India’s role in international institutions.
GS Paper-III:
- Economy, Agriculture, Science & Technology, Environment, Disaster Management, and Internal Security
- Economy: Economic development, inclusive growth, issues like planning, budgeting, agriculture policies, farm subsidies, and the Public Distribution System (PDS).
- Agriculture: Cropping patterns, irrigation systems, food processing, and land reforms.
- Science & Technology: Developments in IT, Space, biotechnology, achievements in science and technology, and the application of technology in governance.
- Environment: Environmental issues such as pollution, conservation, biodiversity, climate change, and environmental impact assessments.
- Disaster Management: Natural disaster preparedness, mitigation, and response strategies.

GS Paper-IV:
- Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
