Second Interstate Tiger Relocation

Why in News?

India carried out its second interstate tiger relocation by transferring a tigress from Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh to Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan. 

Key Points

  • Inter-State Relocation: Tigress PN‑224, a three-year-old tigress from Madhya Pradesh's Pench Tiger Reserve was airlifted to Rajasthan. 
  • Significance: The move is part of wildlife conservation measures to enhance genetic diversity, improve population stability, and reinforce Rajasthan as a tiger habitat. 
  • Interstate Cooperation: This is the second interstate tiger relocation in India, highlighting coordination among state forest departments and  National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). 
  • First Relocation: India’s first interstate tiger relocation took place in 2018, when two tigers (Mahavir and Sundari) were translocated from Kanha Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, to Satkosia Tiger Reserve, Odisha. 
  • NTCA: Established in 2005 under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, is India’s apex body for tiger conservation 
  • Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve: It is located in Bundi district of Rajasthan and was notified as a tiger reserve in 2021 
    • It lies between Ranthambore and Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserves.
