Appointment of New Chief Justice of Uttarakhand
Why in News
- On January 19, 2022, a notification was issued by the Central Government for the appointment of Justice Vipin Sanghi of the Delhi High Court as the Chief Justice of Uttarakhand.
 
Key Points
- The appointment of a new Chief Justice by the Central Government has been approved within a month of the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramanna.
 - Article 217 of the Constitution states that the appointment of a High Court Judge shall be made by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and the Governor of the State concerned.
 - In the case of appointment of a judge other than the Chief Justice, the Chief Justice of the High Court is consulted.
 - At present, the appointment of High Court judges is recommended by a collegium, consisting of the CJI and two senior-most judges. However, the proposal for appointment of judges is initiated by the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court in consultation with the two senior most colleagues.
 - The number of permanent judges in the Uttarakhand High Court is nine and the number of additional judges is two.
