Why in News?
The Union Government approved an ₹887 crore plan to develop a world-class marina in Mumbai Harbour — the Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina — to boost coastal shipping, maritime tourism and the blue economy.
Key Points
- Approval: The Union Government, through the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, cleared the ₹887 crore Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina project.
- Location: The marina will be developed in Mumbai Harbour over a 12-hectare water area with capacity to berth 424 yachts up to 30 meters long.
- Mumbai Harbour: It is a natural deep-water harbour on India’s west coast, serving as a major port and maritime hub.
- Investment Model: Mumbai Port Authority will invest ₹470 crore for core infrastructure, while ₹417 crore will come from a private operator for onshore facilities.
- Employment & Economy: The project is expected to create over 2,000 jobs and enhance coastal shipping & maritime tourism, strengthening the blue economy.
- Facilities: Planned onshore infrastructure includes a marina terminal, sailing school, maritime tourism centre, hotel, clubhouse and skill development hub.
- Vision Alignment: The marina supports national frameworks like Maritime India Vision 2030, Sagarmala Programme, Cruise Bharat Mission and the Port Master Plan 2047 to make India a global maritime destination
