Under the National Quantum Mission23 academic institutions have been approved to establish quantum teaching laboratories, with over 100 additional proposals currently under evaluation. 

National Quantum Mission 

  • About: NQM is a flagship initiative by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) with a total outlay of Rs 6,003 crore for the period from 2023-24 to 2030-31 
    • It is designed to establish India as a leading global force in quantum technologies by fostering a vibrant ecosystem for scientific and industrial R&D. 
  • Objectives: The NQM aims to seed, nurture, and scale up R&D in quantum technologies to accelerate technology-led economic growth and build indigenous capabilities. 
  • Four Key Domains: The mission focuses on four main areas: 
  • Quantum Materials & Devices: Advancement in fabrication capabilities for quantum materials to support indigenous hardware development. 
  • Implementation Structure (Hub-and-Spoke Model): The mission is executed through 4 Thematic Hubs hosted at premier institutions across India. 
  • Strategic Alignment: The NQM aligns with broader national initiatives like Digital IndiaMake in India, and Skill India, with a strong emphasis on strategic applications in security, defense, and critical infrastructure.
