Why in News?
The Government of India launched a nationwide Pulses Revolution under the Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission from Amlaha in Sehore district, Madhya Pradesh.
Key Points:
- Launch: The Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission was inaugurated at the Food Legumes Research Centre (FLRP), Amlaha, aiming to make India self-reliant in pulses production.
- Chief Guest: The programme was chaired by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
- Objective: The mission seeks to end India’s dependence on pulse imports and transform the country into a pulse exporter by enhancing production, productivity, processing, and value addition.
- Its focus is on building a complete value chain from seed to market, including seed reforms, cluster development, and enabling farmers to earn fair prices.
- Cluster Model & Incentives: Under the mission, 1,000 pulse mills will be set up across India to enhance processing capacity.
- The government will support mills with subsidies (up to ₹25 lakh per unit) and incentivize cluster-based production, particularly aiding Madhya Pradesh farmers.
- Seed Distribution Reform: The mission aims to reform seed distribution by ensuring state-level seed release and distribution.
- Farmers will be provided improved seed kits and financial support (₹10,000 per hectare) to adopt better production practices.
- Significance: Supports import substitution, farmer income, and nutrition security.
