Why in News? 

The Government of India launched the 2 nanometer (2 nm) semiconductor chip at Qualcomm’s facility in Bengaluru.

  • Launch: The chip launched by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. 
    • He stated that the world is looking towards India because of its talent pool and innovation capabilities, positioning the country as a key contributor to global engineering and high-tech manufacturing. 
  • Significance: The 2 nm chip represents one of the most advanced processes in the semiconductor industry. 
    • Enabling greater performance and energy efficiency in electronic devices.  
    • Its launch signifies a leap forward for India’s semiconductor ecosystem. 
  • Ecosystem Development: He emphasized the importance of collaboration among the government, industry, and academia to foster deep-tech innovation, particularly in chip design, startup support, and ecosystem development. 
  • India Semiconductor Mission 2.0: Focusing on supporting design companies, startups, and the broader semiconductor value chain, including equipment and testing infrastructure. 
  • Academic Support: 315 universities equipped with Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools enabling students to design and validate semiconductor chips.
