Center of Excellence for Breed Development of Animals

Why in News?

  • On July 6, 2022, Haryana's Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister J.P. Dalal informed about setting up of a Center of Excellence for the development of animal breeds in the state with the help of Brazil.

  • Significantly, a delegation led by J.P. Dalal is on a tour of Brazil. After interacting with the President of Gir Association and his team members in Brasilia city, this delegation informed that Gir Association of Brazil has expressed willingness to import Murrah buffalo germplasm from Haryana State through Haryana Livestock Development Board.
  • During the meeting, the delegation discussed and learnt with the members of ABCZ the modalities of setting up a Centre of Excellence for Gir animals in Haryana.
  • The delegation visited Motam Gir Hut Farm in Alexandrio District, near Brasilia, which is one of the largest Gir Farms with over 1500 good quality Gir cows.
  • Dairy practices followed in breeding, nutrition and agricultural management practices were learned and studied by the delegation.
  • J.P Dalal agreed with Jean Marcel Fernandes, Secretary of Trade and International Relations, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supplies, Brazil, to further strengthen mutually beneficial ties in the areas of dairy development and animal breed improvement. This includes the exchange of information and experiences, joint research using techniques such as Embryo Transfer Technology (ETT) and In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and exchange of genetic material and germplasm.
  • He also visited the Embrapa Animal Dairy (Embrapa Gado de Leite) Research Center in Juiz de Fora and discussed areas of cooperation.
