Relevance of Swami Vivekananda's Thoughts for Youth Today

  • 12 Jan 2023

Swami Vivekananda, a spiritual leader, and philosopher was one of the most influential figures of the 19th century. He is considered a major force in the revival of Hinduism and the spread of its spiritual and philosophical teachings in the modern world. His teachings and thoughts continue to be relevant for people of all ages and backgrounds, particularly for the youth of today.

His Chicago Visit

He had a significant impact on people during his visit to Chicago in 1893. He was one of the main speakers at the World's Parliament of Religions, which was held in conjunction with the Chicago World's Fair. His speech at the event, in which he represented Hinduism, was widely praised for its eloquence and wisdom.

In his speech, Vivekananda spoke about the universality of spiritual truths and the need for tolerance and mutual understanding among people of different religions. He also spoke about the importance of the practical application of spiritual principles in daily life. He said, "Religion is not in books, nor in theories, nor in dogmas, nor in talking, not even in reasoning. It is being and becoming".

Vivekananda's message resonated with many people in the audience, and he received a standing ovation after his speech. He was subsequently invited to speak at several other venues in Chicago and around the United States, including at universities and religious institutions. His lectures were well-attended and he was often praised for his wisdom, insight, and ability to convey complex spiritual concepts in a way that was easy to understand.

His speeches were covered widely in the American press, and many people were fascinated by his message of spiritual unity and the practical application of spiritual principles. His visit to the United States helped to introduce the teachings of Vedanta, a non-dualistic spiritual philosophy, to the Western world. Many people were inspired by his message and went on to study Vedanta, and some even became his disciples.

His visit was also a turning point in his own life and he came back with a new vision for the nation as he said "I came back with a new spirit and a new vision. I was convinced that I had a mission to fulfill—to spread the spiritual knowledge of India to the West and to serve my country."

It was after this visit, he established Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, an organization that carries on his teachings.

His Teaching on Self-Reliance and Efforts

One of the most important messages that Swami Vivekananda imparted was the power of self-reliance and the importance of individual effort. He believed that true success and happiness can only be achieved by developing one's own abilities and talents, rather than relying on external factors such as wealth or social status. He encouraged people to develop their own inner strength and to take responsibility for their own lives, rather than depending on others for guidance and support.

This message is particularly relevant for young people today, who are often under pressure to conform to societal expectations and to chase material success. In a world where the emphasis is often on instant gratification and external validation, Swami Vivekananda's message of self-reliance and inner strength can serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of developing one's own character and values.

Swami Vivekananda on Unity of all Religions

Another important aspect of Swami Vivekananda's teachings is his emphasis on the unity of all religions and the universality of spiritual truth. He believed that all religions were different expressions of the same underlying spiritual truths and that people of different faiths should strive to learn from one another and respect one another's beliefs. This message of tolerance and mutual understanding is particularly relevant in today's world, where religious and cultural divisions are often a source of conflict and division.

One of the main ways in which Vivekananda's teachings continue to influence young people today is through the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, the organization he founded. The organization conducts a wide range of educational, spiritual, and social service activities, both in India and around the world, and provides young people with opportunities to learn about and practice the principles of Vedanta, the non-dualistic spiritual philosophy that Vivekananda advocated. Through these activities, many young people are exposed to Vivekananda's teachings and are inspired to apply them in their own lives.

Swami Vivekananda on Self-Improvement

Vivekananda's emphasis on self-improvement and self-realization also appeals to young people who are looking for ways to develop their own potential and make a positive impact on the world. His belief that each individual has within themselves the ability to achieve greatness if they work hard and have faith in themselves, is a message that resonates with many young people today.

Additionally, his belief in the importance of education and in providing opportunities for people to develop their own potential continues to be relevant in the current era as it helps with the holistic development of individuals. This can help individuals to overcome their own self-centeredness, and to live in a way that benefits others. By making a positive impact on the world and the people around them, individuals will find more meaning and purpose in their lives.

In addition to the above, Swami Vivekananda also stressed the importance of education and the need to develop a rational and scientific approach to understanding the world. He believed that education should be aimed at fostering critical thinking and independent thinking, and should not be limited to imparting mere knowledge. This emphasis on education as a means to achieving personal and societal development continues to be relevant today in light of many developing countries.

Swami Vivekananda’s Significance in Today's World

Swami Vivekananda's message of unity, tolerance, and mutual understanding, regardless of the diversity of religions is of utmost importance in today's world, where religious conflicts and extremism are ongoing issues. His teachings can help promote a more peaceful and harmonious society, where different religions, cultures, and ideologies are respected and valued.

Finally, Vivekananda's teachings can also inspire future generations to appreciate the rich spiritual heritage of India and to recognize the value of ancient spiritual traditions in today's world. He was one of the first individuals who highlighted the importance of Indian spiritual traditions to the west and his teachings and efforts can continue to inspire the youth to preserve and promote the same.

In conclusion, the thoughts and teachings of Swami Vivekananda continue to be highly relevant to the youth of today. His message of self-reliance, the unity of all religions, and the importance of education are all important lessons that can help young people navigate the challenges and opportunities of the modern world. With that being said, the teachings of Swami Vivekananda have the potential to inspire future generations to lead more fulfilling and meaningful lives by developing their own inner strength and potential, serving others, and promoting peace, unity, and harmony in the world. As we continue to face many societal and economic issues, we can look to the wisdom of this great spiritual leader for guidance and inspiration.
