Q. Smart City Mission: Discuss about the central government’s ambitious smart city mission.

Introduction-

Smart City-


There is no universally accepted definition of a Smart City, but in general it is city with all core infrastructures and provides a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and IT enabled services.

Smart City Mission-

Smart city mission is one of the three flagship urban missions launched Government of India, with a mission to develop 100 cities all over the country making them citizen friendly and sustainable.

In news- 

Recently central government has announced the names of 13 cities, in the second round of selection process. With this till now government has selected 33 cities under the state 2 criteria of the competition for prioritizing cities for financing. The 100 potential smart cities were already nominated based on Stage 1 criteria.

Importance of smart city mission-

  • Urban India is stilling facing basic problems like walk-ability, public transport, waste management and pollution etc.

  • Smart City Mission aims to improve public services such as assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management systems, efficient urban mobility, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation etc. If implemented in true spirit definitely it will enhance the lives of urban life.

  • It helps to provide better quality of life in terms of better connectivity, cleanliness, integrated public transport, improved infrastructure and which will leads to overall economic development.

Challenges-

  • As scale and complexity the project is very huge, hence funding and execution will be a huge challenge for the ambitious smart city project.

  • Considering the social-economic status of many cities, creating self sustaining cities is one of the biggest challenges of the mission.  

  • Creating smart city is not just creating physical infrastructures, but also delivering the public services to citizens effectively, which is the main issue that India still finds difficulty even after nearly seven decades of Independence. 

Suggestion-

  • The smart city mission should be made practical, feasible and affordable. For that government should take all stakeholders on board and should be discussed thoroughly then it can be implemented. 

  • The development of the smart cities needs to be done smartly and the work will have to be customized according to the requirement of local needs.

  • To improve the public service delivery mechanism, more autonomy should be given to the cities.

Conclusion-

Smart City Mission is an ambitious urban renewal programme, if implemented with letter and spirit, it definitely enhance the quality of lives of urban citizens. To make it successful government should address all the challenges associated with it. This mission has a great potential to solve many issue of the urban India.
