Why in News?
The West Bengal Government has advanced the launch of the Banglar Yuva Sathi scheme — a monthly allowance programme for unemployed youth — to 1 April 2026.
Key Points:
- Launch: The scheme will commence from 1 April 2026 instead of the earlier projected date of 15 August, aligning with the start of the financial year.
- Objective: The scheme is designed to provide monthly financial support to educated unemployed youth in West Bengal until they secure employment or for up to five years.
- Beneficiaries: Unemployed residents of West Bengal aged 21 to 40 years who have passed the Madhyamik (Class X) examination are eligible.
- Eligible beneficiaries will receive ₹1,500 per month directly in their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
- Interim Budget Allocation: The scheme was announced as part of the interim (vote-on-account) budget, with a proposed allocation of ₹5,000 crore for implementation.
- Youth enrolled in scholarships such as Aikyashree, Medhashree, Shikhyashree, and Student Smart Card will also be eligible under this scheme.
- Significance: Banglar Yuva Sathi provides economic relief to unemployed youth, supports job preparation and skill development, and forms part of the state’s broader social welfare and employment strategy aimed at reducing unemployment challenges
