Starlink Signs First India Deal with Maharashtra for Satellite Internet

Why in News?

Maharashtra has become the first Indian state to partner with Elon Musk’s Starlink to provide satellite-based internet connectivity in remote and underserved regions.

  • The Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed between Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt. Ltd. and the Department of Information Technology, Government of Maharashtra
    • The service deployment is subject to final regulatory and compliance clearances from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India
  • Project Coverage:
    • Aims to connect tribal schools, primary health centres, forest outposts, and coastal zones.
    • Focus on aspirational districts—Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Dharashiv, and Washim.
    • To enable smart connectivity for education, telemedicine, coastal monitoring, and emergency response.

Starlink

  • Starlink is a satellite internet constellation developed by SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk to provide global broadband connectivity.
  • It operates in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) at around 550 km altitude, ensuring low-latency, high-speed internet access.
  • Key Features:
    • Provides high-speed broadband connectivity even in rural and remote regions.
    • Supports real-time communication, video calls, streaming, and online learning.
    • Uses thousands of interconnected satellites for uninterrupted global coverage.
    • Employs reusable orbital-class rockets (Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy) for cost-effective deployment.
