Why in News?

Rajasthan has emerged as the largest wool-producing state in India in FY 2023–24, accounting for nearly half of the country’s total wool output.

Key Points:

  • Rajasthan Tops: Rajasthan produced approximately 16 million kg of wool in FY 2023–24, contributing around 47% of India’s total wool production, making it the top wool-producing state in the country.
    • India’s Total Wool Output: India produced about 33.69 million kg of wool in FY 2023–24.
    • The country has one of the largest sheep populations globally, supporting its wool industry.
  • Released by: The wool production data (FY 2023–24) is based on official statistics released by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD) under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India.
  • Favourable Conditions: The state’s arid and semi-arid climate, vast grazing lands, and traditional pastoral practices support large-scale sheep rearing.
    • Indigenous breeds such as Marwari and Chokla are prominent in Rajasthan and are mainly known for producing coarse wool suitable for carpets and blankets.
  • Types of Wool in India: Around 85% of India’s wool is carpet-grade, while a small proportion is apparel-grade and fine wool.
  • Other Leading States: After Rajasthan, major wool-producing states include Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
  • Importance: The wool sector supports rural livelihoods, especially pastoral communities, and contributes significantly to the carpet, handloom, and textile industries.
