Punjab Governor Grants Assent to Anti-Sacrilege Bill

Why in News? 

In a significant legal development, the Governor of Punjab has granted assent to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposes stricter punishments to deter incidents of 'beadbi' (sacrilege) and uphold the sanctity of the Guru Granth Sahib.

  • Key Features: The amendment provides for stricter punishments, including enhanced imprisonment, for acts of disrespect against the Guru Granth Sahib.  
    • Deterrence: It focuses on creating a strong deterrent framework to prevent sacrilegious acts and ensure respect for sacred texts. 
  • Significance: Repeated incidents of sacrilege in Punjab have led to public unrest and law and order disturbances 
    • Ensure Harmony: The Bill reflects the state’s responsibility to ensure communal harmony and social stability.

  • Concerns Involved: Despite its intent, concerns remain regarding the proportionality of punishment and the possibility of misuse of stringent provisions.  
    • Constitutional Rights: There are also constitutional considerations, particularly in relation to Fundamental Rights such as freedom of speech (Article 19) and freedom of religion (Article 25) 
    • Curtain Civil Liberties: Excessive criminalisation may risk infringing upon civil liberties.
