Why In News?

According to information received from the media on November 23, 2023, the Uttar Pradesh state government has given permission to the operators of cinema halls that have been closed for years to build a multi-storey complex.

Key Points:

  • Special Secretary, Housing Department, Uday Bhanu Tripathi has issued a government order in this regard after the consent of the State Tax Department.
  • Now a multi-storey complex can be built on the land of such a cinema hall on the basis of land use prescribed in the master plan. Before passing the map, no objection certificate related to entertainment tax will have to be obtained.
  • It should be noted that about 800 single screen cinema halls have been closed in the state and about 150 are on the verge of closure. Single screen cinemas are mostly located in the older denser areas of the city.
  • Despite the closure of the cinema hall, its land is not being used. Due to this, the cinema hall owner as well as the government is losing revenue. Considering these conditions, the government has given permission to build a multi-storey building on the land of a single screen cinema hall.
