Why in News?
In a bid to enhance the global identity and academic standing of higher learning institutions (HEIs) in Uttar Pradesh (UP), the state’s higher education department has mandated the linking of all academic publications to Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs).
- This initiative aims to ensure that research papers, dissertations, abstracts, project proceedings, and other academic outputs achieve international visibility.
- Currently, only about 8% (8,410 out of 104,742) of the research publications by UP teachers on the Samarth-CAS portal are DOI-linked.
Key Points
- Digital Object Identifier (DOI): A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned to digital content, such as research papers and dissertations.
- It serves as a permanent and stable link to the academic work, ensuring its accessibility, discoverability, and citation over time.
- DOIs are used globally by researchers, publishers, and academic databases to track and link scholarly work efficiently.
- Objective: The move towards DOI linkage aligns with the vision outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the global recognition of educational institutions and the incorporation of technology into education.
