Why in News

  • On August 31, 2021, Akanksha Kumari, a resident of Barkagaon, Hazaribagh, became the first woman mining engineer of CCL.

Key Points

  • This is the first time in CCL's four-decade history that a woman mining engineer has contributed. Akanksha joined duty in the Churi underground mine of North Karanpura area.
  • Akanksha is Coal India's second and first woman mining engineer to contribute to an underground mine. By choosing mining in his engineering course, she has not only broken the misconception that mining is only for men, but has also inspired more aspiring girl students like herself.
  • It is noteworthy that Akanksha's father Ashok Kumar is a teacher in a school in Barkagaon and mother Malti Kumari is a housewife. She did her schooling from Navodaya Vidyalaya.
  • It is to be known that Akanksha Kumari completed her engineering studies from BIT (Sindri) Dhanbad in 2018. Before joining Coal India, she worked for three years at Hindustan Zinc Limited's Ballanaria mine in Rajasthan.
