Introduction
The Gupta Empire, flourishing between the 3rd and 6th centuries CE, was established by Sri Gupta and expanded significantly across northern India. It is often referred to as the “Golden Age of India as this period was marked by remarkable advancements in arts, science and literature.

Development of literature during Gupta age:
- Flourishing of Sanskrit Literature: The Gupta period witnessed a remarkable expansion of Sanskrit literature, fueled by the enthusiastic patronage of Gupta kings. This era is marked by a surge in religious and philosophical texts, reflecting the cultural values of “neo-Hinduism.”
- Literary Works and Figures: Notable literary figures emerged during this time, including:
- Kalidasa: Renowned for his plays and poetry, such as Abhijnana-Shakuntalam and Meghadutam.
- Bhasa: Known for his 13 plays, contributing to the richness of Sanskrit drama.
- Vatsyayana: Author of the Kamasutra, a treatise on love and pleasure.
- Visakhadatta: Wrote Mudrarakshasa, Devi Chandraguptam.
