Introduction:

The Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) was launched by the Government of India in 2014 to support top athletes in their preparation for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It provides financial assistance and holistic support to athletes, enhancing their chances of success in international competitions.

Body:

• Assistance Provided: Under TOPS, athletes receive funding from the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) for specialized training programs. Core group athletes are given an out-of-pocket allowance (OPA) of ₹50,000 per month, while Development Group athletes receive ₹25,000 per month.
• Holistic Support: In addition to financial support, athletes receive coaching, sports science support, and access to high-level training facilities.

  • 2023 Asian and Para-Asian Games: India achieved its highest-ever medal tally, with 107 and 111 medals, respectively.
  • Paris 2024 Olympics: Manu Bhaker won two bronze medals, becoming the first Indian woman to win two medals in a single edition of the Games, with ₹2 crore invested in her training under TOPS.
