GS Paper 2
Geography & Economy
Day 9: Answer these questions in 15 words each.
(a) Which rivers of Rajasthan flow into the Gulf of Khambhat?
(b) What is a shadow zone in the context of earthquake waves?(a):
Rajasthan is home to several rivers, some of which flow westward towards the Gulf of Khambhat. The two major rivers from Rajasthan that drain into this Gulf are the Mahi and Sabarmati. These rivers play an essential role in the state's hydrology.
- Mahi River: The Mahi is one of the primary rivers in Rajasthan, flowing westward and draining into the Gulf of Khambhat.
- Sabarmati River: Another significant river that flows westward and joins the Gulf of Khambhat.
(b):
A shadow zone is a specific area on Earth where seismic waves, generated by an earthquake, cannot be detected. This occurs due to the refraction, reflection, or absorption of seismic waves as they pass through the Earth’s different layers.
- S-waves:
These waves cannot pass through the liquid outer core of the Earth, creating a large shadow zone beyond 105°. - P-waves:
These waves are refracted at the boundary of the outer core, forming a smaller shadow zone between 105° and 145°.
