Maharashtra PSC exam pattern

Maharashtra Public Service Commission conducts State Services in following manner:

A) Prelims

The Preliminary Examination consist of two paper on the subject specified below, which will be of objective type and carry a maximum of 200 marks, each. 

The Prelims syllabus includes: 

Paper I - (200 marks)

  1. Current events of state, national and international importance.

  2. History of India (with special reference to Maharashtra) and Indian National Movement.

  3. Maharashtra, India and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of Maharashtra, India and the World.

  4. Maharashtra and India - Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Urban Governance, Public Policy, Rights issues, etc.

  5. Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.

  6. General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change-that do not require subject specialization.

  7. General Science.


Paper II - (200 marks)

  1. Comprehension

  2. Interpersonal skills including communication skills.

  3. Logical reasoning and analytical ability.

  4. Decision - making and problem - solving.

  5. General mental ability.

  6. Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation(Charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc.- Class X level)

  7. Marathi and English Language Comprehension skills (Class X/XII level).


B) Mains

There shall be six compulsory papers, two in languages - marathi and english (100 marks each, of Descriptive nature) and four in general studies (150 marks each, multiple choice question type objective With 3:1 negative marking)

Paper 1:

  • History

  • Geography

  • Geography and Agriculture


Paper 2:

  • The Constitution of India

  • The Political System (Structure, Powers and Functions of Governments)

  • State Government and Administration

  • District Administration

  • Rural and Urban Local Government

  • Educational System

  • Parties and Pressure Group

  • The Media

  • The Electoral Process

  • Administrative Law

  • Central and State Government Privileges

  • Some Pertinent Laws 

  • Social Welfare and Social Legislation

  • Public ServicesControl over Public Expenditure



Paper 3:

  • Human resource development

  • Human rights


Paper 4:

  • Economy and planning

  • Economics of development and agriculture

  • Science and technology developments


C) Interview:

  • Interview shall be for 100 marks
