Surface-To-Air Missile Developed With Israel-successfully test fired
Sep 29, 2016
Why in news: India successfully test fired a new, long range surface-to-air missile jointly developed with Israel from a defence base off Odisha coast.
About the missile:
- The long range missile is a product of a joint venture between India and Israel
- Apart from the missile, the system includes a Multi Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MF STAR) for detection, tracking and guidance of the missile
- It is designed to defend against any type of airborne threat including aircraft, helicopters, anti-ship missiles, and UAVs as well as cruise missiles and combat jets.
- Both maritime and land-based versions of the system exist.
The Rs 2,606-crore LR-SAM development project was sanctioned for Indian warships in December 2005 but was hit by several delays. The reasons ranged from mid-way upward revision of performance requirements and development of some new technologies to the technological challenge of “combustion instability of rocket motors“ that took a long time to resolve.
