The cities which are shortlisted are Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Amravati, Aurangabad and Nashik. The government has exercised caution to spread its smart cities project across all the five regions—Mumbai (Konkan region), Pune (Western Maharashtra), Nashik (North Maharashtra) Aurangabad (Marathwada), Nagpur, Amravati (Vidarbha). The smart cities make over would be undertaken in partnership with Israel.

  • After holding wide-ranging talks Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai agreed to cooperate in building smart cities and explore the Indian IT potential to increase efficiency of smart urban solutions.

  • Apart from Mumbai rest of the cities would require a lot of upgradation to meet the world class status.

  • In 2014, Tel Avis beat 250 metros to emerge as smartest city of world.

Some of the areas that were particularly outlined for cooperation included community outreach and participation through use of social media and open data, online municipal services, traffic and parking management through IT, security and emergencies, promoting a Start-up City and youth entrepreneurship, green construction and rational land use to create an appealing urban environment etc.
