Sikkim Becomes First Organic State in India
Jan 19, 2016

Sikkim has become India's first fully organic state by converting around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land into sustainable cultivation. Sikkim has achieved fully-organic status in the end of December. Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally announced this at a sustainable Sikkim Organic Mission's agriculture conference in Gangtok on January 18.

Around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land was gradually converted to certified organic land by implementing organic practices and principles as per guidelines laid down in National Programme for Organic Production.

Policy & Vision of Sikkim Organic Mission

  • Frame policy of organic farming in the state.

  • Prepare a clear cut implementable road map of organic farming.

  • To implement the programmes of organic farming with a systematic approach to achieve the target set by the Govt.

  • To develop and explore markets of Organic commodities.

  • To develop linkage between the organic farmers and the market with intervention of certification agencies so as to continue the policy permanently.

  • To develop Sikkim organic brand with proper logo.

  • To make farming profitable, sustainable and environmentally acceptable.

In the long term, organic farming leads in subsistence of agriculture, bio-diversity conservation and environmental protection.

Sustainable farming will also help in building the soil health resulting in sustainable increased crop production.

Besides it will also boost the tourism industry in the tiny landlocked Himalayan state.

Resorts have already been marketing themselves as completely organic where tourists can pluck, cook and relish fresh organic food from their kitchen gardens.

Bestowed with varied agro-climatic condition, some of the major crops in Sikkim include large cardamom, ginger, turmeric, off-season vegetables, flowers, Sikkim mandarin, kiwi, buck wheat, paddy maize and millets.

As Sikkimese farmers were never dependent heavily on chemicals, the yield per hectare has not been affected by organic farming.
