Reliance Jio Offers Bay of Bengal Gateway
May 07, 2016

Reliance Jio has recently announced the launch of the 8,100 km submarines communications cable the Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG). BBG is one of the new cable systems in the region in which Reliance Jio has invested as part of its broadband plans.

Reliance Jio owns and operates the strategically important undersea cable landing facility in Chennai, providing a high-speed, high-capacity, low latency route connecting India to the rest of the world.

Salient Features

  • The BBG will link South East Asia and the Middle East, then onward to Europe, Africa and Far East Asia through interconnection with existing cable systems.

  • BBG uses the most advanced high-speed broadband fibre optic technology; dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) which allows the capacity to be increased at will without any additional submarine intervention.

  • The initial equipped capacity of the system is a mammoth 9Tb/s and a staggering design capacity of 55Tb/s.

  • The BBG cable system is designed to provide upgradable and transmission facilities by adopting the state-of-the-art 100 Gbps technology.

  • BBG offers not just direct connectivity in and out of India through Chennai and Mumbai but also acts as an extension of Reliance Jio's 100 Gbps core network.

  • This global connectivity brings key international content hubs closer to the customers, delivering a much richer experience as an important part of driving India's broadband adoption, enabling consumers to shift away from the current high-cost low value propositions.

  • Two branches of the ultrahigh-speed communications system would connect India at Chennai on east coast and Mumbai on the west coast.

  • Reliance Jio owns and operates the strategically important undersea cable landing facility in Chennai, while the Mumbai landing of the BBG submarine cable is being handled by Vodafone.

The project was first announced in 2013 by a consortium of global telecom majors, including Telekom Malaysia Berhad (Malaysia), Vodafone Group (UK), Omantel (Oman), Etisalat (UAE), Reliance Jio Infocomm (India) and Dialog Axiata (Sri Lanka).

This opening comes after a delay of over a year: the system was expected to carry commercial traffic by the end of 2014, after the international consortium members signed the Construction and Maintenance Agreement (C&MA) and the Supply Contract for BBG in Kuala Lumpur in April 2013.

Reliance Jio Offers 4G Connections through Invite

After the soft launch of Reliance Jio 4G services in December last year, tech savvy people are waiting for the commercial launch, which was due to happen in April. While the company is taking its time to optimize its network before official rollout, it is also looking forward to extend the trial of its 4G services to public via an invite system.

Reliance employees who have got the trial SIM cards earlier can now refer 10 people to try out the next-gen 4G LTE connectivity. The invite sent by employees will enable people to purchase a LYF-branded smartphone, which will come bundled with unlimited voice calls and 4G data for a period of three months.

Under this offer, new connections will also get free unlimited access to Jio apps for three months, which includes services such as Jio Beats, Jio Mags, JioXpressNews, Jio Drive, Jio Security and Jio On-Demand.

Reliance Jio also revealed that its services are being tested by more than 500,000 users, most of them using LYF-branded smartphones. After commencing full-scale commercial operations, the company aims to increase its user base by a few million users.

With the extended trial, the company can extensively test its network and services, while pushing the sales of LYF smartphones at the same time. These smartphones, priced between Rs 5,490 to Rs 19.399, are offered by Reliance Jio’s retail arm Reliance Digital and Reliance Digital Xpress. After getting an invite from a RIL employee, people just need to walk into any of these stores with the invitation code and purchase one.
