Pakistan has World's First Solar Parliament
Mar 10, 2016

Pakistan’s parliament became the world’s first to run fully on solar power. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the solar power system.

• This solar power project provides 62Mw to the parliament and a surplus 18Mw to the national grid.

• This project was officially launched during President Xi Jinping’s visit last year.

• The project was completed in seven months at a cost of Rs. 280.61 million.

• The venture was funded by China as an act of friendship.

• The solar plant will help the parliament save around Rs. 12 million in electricity bills every year.

• In May 2015, Pakistan inaugurated its first solar power plant in the province of Punjab, which was also built with Chinese investments.

Several parliaments in the world are partially run on solar energy, including the Reichstag in Berlin, the houses of parliament in Canberra, Australia, and Israel's Knesset, which has one of the largest solar panels in the world.
