Indo-Nepal Combined Military Exercise (Surya Kiran-IX)

A 14-day India-Nepal combined military exercise, Surya Kiran-IX was conducted at Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand) from 8 February to 21 February. Senior Nepalese Army officials were took part in the combined exercise along with their Indian counterparts during the validation phase of the exercise.

  • The Nepal army was represented by officers and troops of the elite Shree RudraDhoj battalion while an infantry battalion participated on behalf of the Indian Army. 

  • The combined battalion-level exercise was conducted under the aegis of the Panchshul Brigade of the Central Command. 

  • During the exercise, an Infantry battalion each from Indian Army and the Nepalese Army trained together and shared their experiences of Counter Terrorism operations and Jungle Warfare in mountain terrain. 

  • The Surya Kiran series of exercises is a bi-annual event which is conducted alternatively in Nepal and India. 

  • The aim of this combined training exercise is to enhance inter-operability between the Indian and the Nepalese Army units in Jungle Warfare and Counter Terrorism operations in mountainous terrain. 

  • The role and importance of Armed Forces in disaster management in both the countries has assumed increasing significance in the recent years. Therefore, the training also focussed on Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief including medical and aviation support.

  • It also focussed on the basics of Disaster Management with special reference to Pandemic/Epidemic control and aviation aspects. 

Over the years, the two countries have decided to progressively increase the scope and content of the combined exercise. The Eighth India-Nepal Combined Exercise (Surya Kiran-VIII) was held at Salijhandi, Nepal from 23 Februray to 7 March 2015. The exercise was conducted under the aegis of Nepalese Army.

The combined training, mutual interaction and sharing of experiences between both the countries shall further strengthen the historical military and strategic ties, giving further fillip to the bilateral relations and existing strong bonding between both countries.
