Indian Navy Ships in Gulf of Persia on a Goodwill Visit
Oct 15, 2014

Indian Navy Ships Tir (Senior Officer's ship), Sujata (Offshore Patrol Vessel) and Tarangini (Sail Training Ship), elements of the First Training Squadron based in Kochi under the Southern Naval Command, are on a flag showing visit to the Persian Gulf.  The Southern Naval Command (SNC) is the Training Command of the Indian Navy, wherein training for officers and sailors, including from friendly foreign countries, is conducted.

Frontline elements of the Training Squadron of the Indian Navy aims to underline the historical maritime links of the region with India as well as send a message of India's continued commitment to the stability and security of this vital region. India's energy security for its uninterrupted economic growth, and the well-being of the millions of Indians who have made these ancient lands of the Gulf region their second home, is dependent on the region remaining stable and secure.

The ships of the Training Squadron embody the Indian nation with its interminable energy, excellent human resource, technological prowess and unity in diversity. All the three ships have been designed and built in India and are a potent symbol of India's growing indigenous shipbuilding capability. Currently, the Indian Navy has over 40 warships under construction at shipyards across India.

The First Training Squadron comprises Indian Naval Ships Tir, Gharial, Sujata, Indian Coast Guard Ship Varuna and two Sail Training Ships, Sudarshini and Tarangini, all of which have been built in India, and are based at Kochi in southern India. The ships of the First Training Squadron are the only ships of Indian Navy and Coast Guard where intensive practical sea training of 24 weeks is conducted for undertrainee officers.

The Indian Navy is also one of the few navies in the world utilising Sail Training Ships in its Training Squadron to foster the time honoured virtues of courage, camaraderie and endurance in junior officers embarking on a naval career.
