India-Maldives Meet

The President of the Republic of Maldives, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom met met the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and held bilateral talks.

The following Agreements were signed in the presence of the President of Maldives and the Prime Minister of India:

a) Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the field of Health:

MoU aims to establish comprehensive cooperation between the two sides in health sector. The main areas of cooperation include exchange of training of medical doctors, officials and other health professionals; assistance in development of human resources and setting up of health care facilities; medical and health research development, procurement of generic and essential drugs etc. A Working Group would be established to implement the MoU.

b) Exchange of Letters on extending the Memorandum of Understanding on Manpower requirements of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital

An MoU on Manpower Requirements of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) was signed between India and Maldives in 2008. The MoU provided for training of Maldivian doctors in India as well as in Maldives and deputation of Indian doctors in IGMH. Its validity period of 5 years ended in September 2013. The Government of Maldives requested for the renewal of the MoU in accordance with para 8.2 of the MoU.

c) Memorandum of Agreement for allotment of plot to the High Commission of Maldives

Plot No. 28-B, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi has been allotted to the High Commission of Maldives for their Chancery by the Ministry of Urban Development.

Further Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom while addressing members of three industry chambers- CII, Ficci and Assocham invited Indian companies for investment in areas such as fisheries, tourism and hospitality, transport and energy.

Maldives is ready to sign Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA) with Maldives. The agreement would help to protect Indian investments in that country.

Trade between India and Maldives stood at USD 128.65 million in 2012-13. It was USD 143.49 million in 2011-12.
