Global Rule of Law Index; India Ranks 59th

The World Justice Project (WJP) Rule of Law Index is the most comprehensive index of its kind and the only to rely solely on primary data. The Index’s scores are built from the assessments of local residents (1,000 respondents per country) and local legal experts, ensuring that the findings reflect the conditions experienced by the population, including marginalized sectors of society.

Performance is assessed using 44 indicators across eight categories, each of which is scored and ranked globally and against regional and income peers: 

1. Constraints on Government Powers

2. Absence of Corruption

3. Open Government

4. Fundamental Rights

5. Order and Security

6. Regulatory Enforcement 

7. Civil Justice 

8. Criminal Justice

  • Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Austria, Germany, Singapore and Australia occupy the first 10 Global Ranks in that order. United Kingdom (UK) is at rank 12 and USA is at 19 rank, while China is at 71 rank.

  • India has been ranked at 59, which is behind Nepal (48) and Sri Lanka (58). India’s global ranking (out of 102 countries) on the basis of these individual factors is as under:

    1. Constraints on Government Powers Factor–38/102

    2. Absence of Corruption Factor–68/102

    3. Open Government Factor–37/102

    4. Fundamental Rights Factor–61/102

    5. Order and Security Factor–90/102

    6. Regulatory Enforcement Factor–69/102

    7. Civil Justice Factor –88/102

    8. Criminal Justice–44/102

The Rule of Law Index provides original, impartial data on how the rule of law is experienced by the general public in 102 countries around the globe. The Index relies on over 100,000 household and 2,400 expert surveys to measure how the rule of law is experienced in practical, everyday situations by ordinary people around the world.
