First International Yoga Day Celebrated All Over the World
Jun 23, 2015

On 21 June the first International Day of Yoga was observed across the world. The main function was organized at the Rajpath, New Delhi, in which 36 thousand people participated along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was an unprecedented demonstration of India's soft power as tens of thousands across the world took part in this event.

  • The mega event at Rajpath was replicated across state capitals, cities, towns and rural areas in the country.
  • Yoga was performed at events across the world—from New York to Trinidad and Tobago, from the Maldives to Australia, from Tel Aviv to Moscow, from on board Indian naval ships to the high Siachen glacier, at schools and at innumerable residential localities.
  • Events were held in the morning hours in 192 countries, organized by the Indian missions and yoga centres.

Guinnes World Records: The Ministry of AYUSH has been awarded with two Guinness World Records in two different categories on the first International Day of Yoga.

  • Category 1 was for the largest number of participants in a Yoga Lesson at single venue. The earlier record was held by Vivekanand Kendra, a Gwalior-based institute, with 29,973 participants. To beat that record a target of 30,000 was required. 21 June broke that record as 35,985 participants performed Yoga at Rajpath.

  • Category 2 was most number of nationalities in a Yoga Lesson. To achieve this at least participants from 50 countries were required to perform. On 21 June participants from 84 countries performed Yoga at Rajpath.

It is worth mentioning here that The United Nations General Assembly on 11 December 2014 adopted an India-led resolution declaring June 21 as 'International Day of Yoga'. It was introduced by India's Ambassador to the United Nations Asoke Mukerji and had 175 nations joining as co-sponsors, the highest number ever for any resolution in the 193-member UN General Assembly. This was also for the first time that after the proposal such an initiative implemented by any country in the UN body in less than 90 days.
