Development Projects in the North East

Development projects of road, rail, air, communication, waterways and telecom network are being implemented by various Ministries in the North East States. Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) is coordinating various activities including connectivity projects of the line ministries. Ministry of DoNER and North Eastern Council also provide support for bridging of infrastructural gaps.

  • Railway projects are not sanctioned state-wise. 20 major railway projects consisting of 13 new lines, 2 gauge conversions and 5 doublings, having aggregate length of 2624 km at a cost of Rs.52030 crore have been taken up in the North Eastern Region. An expenditure of Rs.21336 crore has been incurred on these projects upto March, 2016. An outlay of Rs.5040 crore has been provided for 2016-17 for these projects and for the residual liabilities of some completed projects.
  • A total of 197 on-going road development projects in the North Eastern States namely, Arunachal Pradesh-37, Assam-68, Manipur-21, Meghalaya-22, Mizoram-17 Nagaland-10, Sikkim-19, Tripura-3, are being implemented under various programmes/schemes of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoR&TH). The total length and the total sanctioned cost of these projects are 4320.95 kms and Rs.37691.05 crore respectively.
  • 16 Nos. of Hydro Projects (above 25 Mw) aggregating to 5576 Mw are under various stages of construction for the growth and development of North Eastern States.
  • NEC is implementing 715 development projects in North Eastern States, viz Arunachal Pradesh-145, Assam-88, Manipur-106, Meghalaya-76, Mizoram-62, Nagaland-100, Sikkim-51, Tripura-31, which are underway at a total approved cost of Rs.714864.98 lakh.
  • Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for North-Eastern Region at a cost of Rs.5336.18 crore is under implementation.

All these above infrastructure/development projects/schemes create direct as well as indirect employment in North Eastern Region. Ministry of DoNER and North Eastern Council also provide funds for meeting gaps in infrastructure, subject to the availability of funds.

Women and Child Development in North-Eastern Region

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development is implementing various schemes/programmes for empowerment of women and child development through Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) across the country including North-Eastern region.  These are as follows:
  • Swadhar and Short Stay Homes to provide relief and rehabilitation to destitute women and women in distress.
  • Support to Training and Employment Programme for Women (STEP) to ensure sustainable employment and income generation for marginalized and asset-less rural and urban poor women across the country
  • Rajiv Gandhi National Creche Scheme to provide day care facilities to children of age group of 6 months to 6 years of working women who are employed
  • Ujjawala a Comprehensive Scheme for prevention of trafficking and rescue, rehabilitation and re-integration of victims of trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation
  • Rashtriya Mahila Kosh (RMK) to extend micro-finance services to bring about socio-economic upliftment of poor women
  • Working Women Hostels for ensuring safe accommodation for women working away from their place of residence
