Commonwealth Science Conference
Dec 03, 2014

Some of the world’s best scientists were met recently at the Commonwealth Science Conference (CSC) organised by the Royal Society and supported by the Government of India and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust. This was the first Commonwealth Science Conference (CSC) being organised in fifty years.  Local arrangements for the conference were made by the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research.

The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the conference at the J.N. Tata Auditorium.

There were plenty of sessions and lectures on scientific policy, climate, health, information technology etc. The conference began with a session for young people. Ten young Ph.D. holders each from a Commonwealth country attended the ceremony. Selected students from across Commonwealth countries gave short talks on cutting-edge research.

A total of 300 specially invited scientists and 70 Ph.D. students from over 30 countries across the Commonwealth nations attended the conference, along with local delegates from Bangalore.

The CSC aims to encourage collaborations among scientists and inspire youth. It also aims to build scientific capacity and provides opportunities for people to study in countries with better conditions.

The policy report of the Royal Society on resilience to extreme weather conditions was also launched at the conference.
