China-Pakistan Inked 51 Deals worth $46 Billion
Apr 22, 2015

Chinese Premier Xi Jinping was in Pakistan on a two-day state visit, the first by a Chinese Premier in nine years. In their meeting Nawaz Sharif and Xi Jinping vowed to elevate their relationship to an all-weather strategic cooperative partnership that would give further impetus to their existing multifaceted ties. During the talks the two sides reviewed regional and international developments and agreed on making coordinated efforts for peace and security in the region.

  • The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) got a fresh breather as the two countries inked 51 agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to begin practical implementation on the ambitious Silk Route project.

  • 30 of these agreements were related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, regarded as the biggest connectivity project between the two countries after Karakoram highway built in 1979.

  • It will shorten the route for China’s energy imports from the Middle East by about 12,000 km.

  • The CPEC will link China’s underdeveloped far-western region to Pakistan’s Gwadar deep-sea port on the Arabian Sea via PoK through a massive and complex network of roads, railways, business zones, energy schemes and pipelines.

  • The corridor–expected to be ready in three years and provide about 10,400 MWs of electricity–gives China direct access to the Indian Ocean and beyond.

  • The CPEC is part of the mega Silk Road project initiated by China to firm up its connectivity to Europe, Asia and Africa through roads and port networks.

  • Pakistan hopes the investment – the initial focus of which is on electricity – will end its chronic energy crisis and transform the country into a regional economic hub.

  • Other pacts included Gwadar Port, second phase of the Karakoram Highway, Lahore-Karachi Motorway project, Orange Railway Line and several energy projects.

  • Chinas assured its full support to Pakistan for full membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Pakistan conferred its top civilian award 'Nishan-e-Pakistan' on Chinese President Xi Jinping for his outstanding contribution in promotion of relationship between the two countries.
