CCTNS will be Implemented Nationwide Soon

The Ministry of Home Affairs recently organized a National Workshop on Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) to review the implementation status and formulate a time-bound strategy for its better and effective implementation. 

State government officers handling CCTNS project, Directors General of Prison of States, professionals from IT Companies and consulting companies working on this project and NIC participated in the Workshop. 

  • The present status of the CCTNS Project was discussed in detail. 

  • The Workshop has deliberated upon action required for time bound completion of this project as well as sustainability of this project. 

  • The participants recommended for the Central integration of the project with other e-governance systems like UID, National Population Register incorporating mobile and handheld devices to facilitate field level investigation. 

  • The issues of enhanced bandwidth for connectivity, visual dashboards and intelligence tools to make the system useful for decision making and monitoring by higher offices were also discussed. 

  • Participants also deliberated its integration with other components of justice delivery namely prisons, courts, prosecution and forensic labs. 

  • The States also demanded that the funding for the project should be continued by the Central government. 

  • Out of 14,324 Police Stations in the country, approximately 11,000 Police Stations are using CCTNS Software for registration of FIRs. 

  • Out of this, about 9,000 Police Stations registered 100 per cent FIR through this system only.

  • Presently, in Bihar and Rajasthan implementation of project is held up due to cancellation of the contract with the vendors. 

  • States like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, Delhi, Karnataka, UP and Haryana have fully rolled out CCTNS project. 

What is CCTNS?

Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) is a plan scheme conceived in the light of experience of a non-plan scheme namely—Common Integrated Police Application (CIPA). CCTNS is a Mission Mode Project under the National e-Governance Pan of Govt. of India. 

CCTNS aims at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of policing through adopting of principle of e-Governance and creation of a nationwide networking infrastructure for evolution of IT-enabled-state-of-the-art tracking system around 'Investigation of crime and detection of criminals.


  • Make the Police functioning citizen friendly and more transparent by automating the functioning of Police Stations.

  • Improve delivery of citizen-centric services through effective usage of ICT.

  • Provide the Investigating Officers of the Civil Police with tools, technology and information to facilitate investigation of crime and detection of criminals.

  • Improve Police functioning in various other areas such as Law and Order, Traffic Management etc.

  • Facilitate Interaction and sharing of Information among Police Stations, Districts, State/UT headquarters and other Police Agencies.

  • Assist senior Police Officers in better management of Police Force

  • Keep track of the progress of Cases, including in Courts

  • Reduce manual and redundant Records keeping

Under the CCTNS Project, 14,324 Police Stations throughout the country has been proposed to be automated beside 6000 higher offices in police hierarchy e.g. Circles, Sub-Divisions, Districts, Range, Zones, Police Headquarters, SCRBs including scientific and technical organizations having databases required for providing assistance and information for investigation and other purposes e.g. Finger Print Bureaus, Forensic Labs etc..
