Abdulla Yameen sworn as new Maldivian President
Nov 18, 2013

Mr Abdulla Yameen was sworn in as the new President of the Maldives ending nearly two years of political turmoil that plagued the nascent democracy and raised international concerns over the country's future. The president topped the run-off ballot with 51.4 percent of the votes.

Mr Yameen is the half-brother of former autocratic ruler Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

The election was held after three previous attempts were annulled or delayed. In the first round, the favourite and former President Mohamed Nasheed failed to achieve more than 50 percent of the vote.

Mr Yameen's running-mate Mohammad Jameel was sworn in as Vice-President.

It’s believed the outcome of the election will reinforce the role of Islam in the Muslim island state.
