Oct 28, 2016 Related to : GS Paper-3

Ans :

Introduction-

Ease of doing business index is a world bank initiative started since 2004, to review business regulations and their enforcement across the 190 countries.

India and ease of doing business-

Recently World Bank has released its annual ease of doing business index and India has been placed at 131st rank among 190 countries. India which had been ranked 130 in the 2016 report, has improved it position in 2017 by one rank.

Analysis of current position-

  • Though India has undertaken several reform measures to improve the business activities, but its ranking could not improve because other countries around it in the ranking list also did well last year.
  • World bank report has lauded various reform initiatives of India, despite its low ranking.
  • The report praised the government for the reforms it undertook last year and noted that India had made a noticeable improvement in the distance to frontier (DTF) score, an absolute measure of progress towards best practices.
  • As rankings are relative, but DTF score is an absolute figure, India was 35th in DTF improvement last year. India has improved and is at 55.27 compared with last year’s 53.93, while the perfect score is 100.
  • India is one of the few economies that was discussed separately for its reform measures in the report.
  • Similarly the world bank acknowledges India’s gains in various reforms like simplifying tax payments, trade procedures and contract enforcement etc.

Conclusion-

In a current global scenario the Indian is economy is considered as one of the fastest growing in the world. World bank has praised India for its various reform initiatives, which improved India’s absolute score. Though government has undertaken several reforms, but there is a lot of things need to done to improve rank further.
