What’s next-

  • The South Korea ’s Constitutional Court will have up to 180 days to determine whether to formally end Park Geun-hye’s presidency. During that time Park would be suspended as president but not removed.
  • If six of the court’s nine members of constitutional court agree on the impeachment, she will be permanently removed from office and a snap election will follow within two months. If six members of the court don’t approve the impeachment, Ms. Park will be reinstated.
  • The duties of President, including commander in chief of South Korea’s military, temporarily transferred to the prime minister until the court reaches a decision on whether her impeachment is constitutional.
  • The country’s prime minister, whose position in government is largely ceremonial, has become the nation’s acting president, effective immediately.
  • In 2004, lawmakers impeached then President Roh Moo—hyun on allegations of incompetence and election law violations. But the impeachment led to a big public backlash, and the Constitutional Court reinstated Roh two months later.
