Dec 14, 2016 Related to : GS Paper-2

Ans :

The Syrian government troops, with support of Russian forces are battling against Islamic State in various parts of Syria.  In the ongoing battle Syrian government troops have captured almost 85% of the eastern part of the city which fell into rebel hands in 2012. It has been observed that due to battlefield advances, Syrian government will recapture the all of Aleppo city in few weeks.

Aleppo is the largest city and commercial capital of Syria and it was captured by Islamic State in 2012, in one of the early setbacks to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war.

  • Eastern Aleppo was the priciest catch of the rebels where they built a parallel government. Their plan was to expand the revolution to other regime-held territories and they had the backing of regional powers such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
  • Ongoing military triumph is the result of a brutal strategy the regime and the Russians put in place earlier this year. Recapture of Aleppo would shift the balance of the civil war decisively.
  • The Syrian government, launched a relentless bombing campaign in July, imposing a siege on the rebel-held parts of the city. After months of bombing by Russian and Syrian jets broke the rebel supply lines, the army, backed by Hezbollah and Iran-trained militias, moved in to make quick gains.
  • In ongoing battle in various parts of the country against Islamic State, the Syrian government will soon have direct control over all the major cities and population centres.

Now Syrian troops are succeeded in capturing most parts of Syria, which were once controlled by Islamic State. After few years of heavy bloodshed, now peace has to be maintained in the war hit Syria. International communities should come forward in establishing peace in Syria.
