Q. Saudi Arabia’s military operation in Yemen: In the backdrop of recent deadly attack, discuss the Saudi Arabia’s military operation in Yemen.
Oct 13, 2016 Related to : GS Paper-3 and 2

Ans :

The Saudi Arabian has been conducting its military operation in Yemen since 2015, it is considered as an attempt attempt to influence the outcome of the Yemeni Civil War. The war began in response to requests for assistance from the internationally recognized but domestically contested Yemeni government of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. The request was due to an offensive by the Houthis, an armed religious-political movement.

In news-

Recently Soudi Arabia undertook deadly attack on a mourning hall in Sana. This recent attack has left at least 140 people dead and more than 500 injured and most of them civilians.

  • The brutal military strike in one of the poorest Arab countries has evoked international criticism against Saudi Arabia for the use of excessive force, even allegations of war crimes.
  • But Saudi Arabia is claiming that it is defending the internationally recognised regime of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, which operates out of the southern city of Aden, against Shia Houthi rebels.
  • Saudi Arabia is defending that regime which does not enjoy any legitimacy in Yemen. By their deadly attacks Soudi Arabia and its allies have turned Yemen into a humanitarian catastrophe.
  • Even after 18 months of incessant bombing, the Houthis are still defending their bases. Neither the human suffering nor the futility of the campaign has compelled Saudi Arabia to look for other solutions.
  • Mainly Saudi Arabia sees this war as part of its rivalry with Iran. It considers the Houthis to be agents of Iran, and does not want Tehran to have a proxy presence in its backyard.

  • According to the UN estimates that over 10,000 people, mostly civilians, have so far been killed and millions displaced since the Saudi Arabia intervention.
  • Yemen’s already existing poor healthcare system has crumbled and its economy is in a shambles.
  • More than half of Yemen’s 28 million people do not get enough food, while close to 400,000 children endure severe malnutrition.

  • We are witnessing heavy blood baths in middle east regions since last several years. Hence Saudi Arabia cannot be allowed to destroy Yemen further to defend its narrow geopolitical ambitions.
  • USA which recently pulled out of the Syria peace talks citing Russia’s bombing of Aleppo, should ask similar questions of the Saudi Arabia, and use its ties to find a diplomatic solution to the Yemen crisis.

Since last one and half year, Yemen has witnessed severe civil war causing heavy civilian casualty. Currently Yemen needs an immediate ceasefire between the Houthis and the Saudi Arabia, which should be followed by talks involving all stakeholders. Any kind of military operations cannot be allowed any more.
