Introduction-

Recently USA’s the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a declassified version of its report on Russia’s interference in the US presidential election. The report that Russian President has ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential election that included hacking the personal email accounts of Democratic Party officials and political figures.

Background-

  • Following a British intelligence tip-off, the United States government has accused the Russian government of interfering in the 2016 United States elections.
  • The US government publicly announced that it was confident that Russia orchestrated the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and other political organizations of the Democratic Party.
  • Those hacks resulted in the public release of thousands of stolen emails, many of which included damaging revelations about the Democratic Party as well as its presidential nominee. 

Key features of report-

  • The report draws on intelligence gathered by the FBI, CIA, and NSA, concludes with high confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally ordered such a campaign in 2016, which saw hacking of email accounts of Democratic Party officials and other political figures. 
  • According to report, personal information of the victims was passed on to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks and broader media, which in turn disseminated large troves of data. 
  • As report says that, these releases and public propaganda by the Russian regime were aimed to undercut the campaign of the Democratic candidate.

Analysis-

  • Russia’s interference on sovereign and powerful nation like USA has raised the concerns and it has far reaching consequences in the coming time, if the findings of report are true. 
  • Many blames that, there is an unparalleled record of the USA in interfering in the elections of other nations, including in almost all of South America and even in Russia, in 1996. 
  • In today’s modern and democratic world no country has right to interfere in the internal matters of another country.  In this background international organisation like United Nations should initiate a campaign of non interference. 

Conclusion-

America’s national intelligence, in its report has directly blamed Russian President for interfering in the USA’s presidential campaign and USA has warned Russia for consequences. If the findings of reports are true, then it has far reaching consequences on international politics. Hence international organisation should come forward and address these issues.
