Ans :

Recently the Court for the Arbitration of Sport rejected the appeal made by the Russian Olympic Committee and 67 athletes against the order of the International Association of Athletics Federations, which banned Russian athletes on doping scandal.

  • In December 2014, German broadcaster ARD released a documentary, titled ‘Top-secret doping: How Russia makes its winners’, and in documentary it made doping allegations against Russian sports body and athletes.
  • Following the documentary World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has conducted year-long investigation into the Russian athletics industry. In November 2015, WADA confirmed widespread use of performance enhancing drugs and blood doping by Russian track and field athletes, which were encouraged and covered-up by coaches, doctors, and state and sports officials.
  • With this report International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has banned 67 Russian athletes, who were found guilty in doping scandal.
  • Later Russia appealed against IAAF order in the Court for the Arbitration of Sport, but the court rejected Russian appeal and upheld IAAF’s order.

  • The Russian state sponsored doping scandal on the eve of Rio Olympics has greater impact on the international sports community and raises several troubling questions.
  • One report says that, Russian athletes from the vast majority of summer and winter Olympic sports had benefitted from the state sponsored doping programme and it argues against total ban on the 387-member strong Russian Olympic contingent.
  • But Russia argues against collective responsibility and alleges discriminatory attitude against it by IAAF and other institutions.
  • The International Olympic Committee, owing to the overlapping worlds of geopolitics and sports, might well leave the decision to individual sporting bodies, but this episode has created several troubles to Olympics event.

On the eve of Olympics, the pinnacle of sporting excellence, fair play and credibility, this episode suspicion on various activities by athletes and their sporting bodies. IAAF should clean this mess with firmly and take strongest actions against those involved in doping scandals, so that sports should be run on the principles of fair play and credibility.
