Sep 27, 2016 Related to : GS Paper-2

Ans :

Introduction-

The current system of teachers’ education in our country is well below the average requirement. Though India has large number of teachers but these teachers lacks basic professional knowledge with respect to teaching.

Issues-

  • Currently India is facing lack of trained professional teachers, which can be attributed to the rampant commercialisation in teacher training.
  • About 90% of the teacher training institutes lie in the private sector, where standards of training are very low. For example recent news report showed that in Haryana institutes offer teacher training with price gradations.

Impact-

  • The problems associated with teacher training system have created shortage in the number of trained professionals.
  • There are more than 6 lakhs of teachers in the country who need training.
  • It is evident from the fact that less than 10% of candidates who appeared for the 2015 Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) managed to crack it.
  • The TET was introduced after the enactment of RTE to check the minimum qualifications required to become a teacher.
  • Many teachers who undertook Teachers’ Eligibility Test have does not possess even basic knowledge about teaching. This issue has direct impact on Indian education system.

Suggestion-

  • To provide quality education to students, currently we need to train our teachers’ to enhance their professional skills.
  • Similarly teacher training institutes should be regulated very strictly and government should form very strict norms for that.
  • Lastly there need to revitalise national policy on education, which should give more emphasis on teacher training system and it should guided and monitored very strictly.

Conclusion-

Shortage of professional teachers in India reflects the ongoing system of teacher training.  The bad teacher training system has direct impact on our education system which needs to be addressed. Central and state government should come together and revitalise the current system of teacher education by imbibing best systems in various parts of the country. Similarly national education policy should focus more on teacher training aspects.
