Q. Public School Education: Will improving the public school education empowers marginalised sections of the society?
Apr 13, 2016 Related to : GS Paper 1 and 2.

Ans :

Introduction-

Quality and reach of school education is one of the core issues that India is facing since its independence. To address the problems in education both quantitative and qualitative, Indian parliament has passed Right to Education act in 2009. In India about 96% of children between 6 to 14 years of age are enrolled in schools. Though we are doing well in terms of quantitative aspect, but still facing issues in of quality aspect of education. Unless we improve our school education, the efforts of realising India’s demographic dividend will yield no result and fails to empower citizens particularly of marginalised sections of society.

Issues-

As per some survey reports more than 50% of students in India are classified as functionally uneducated and unskilled or simply half educated. Public schools across the country have no trained teachers and many schools do not have adequate teaching staff. More than half of public schools are not yet compliant with the complete set of RTE infrastructure indicators. It affects the children of marginalised section, as they do not afford private schools.

Way Ahead-

We cannot expect private schools to take up the burden of educating India’s youth. The only way to provide decent education and opportunity to the vast majority of children is to bring government schools at par with that of private schools by improving both qualitative and quantitative aspects. If government schools compete with private schools then it bill boost standards of elementary education, which is crucial factor for higher education. This in turn helps in getting the jobs and empowering the citizens of the country.

Conclusion-

Excellent quality public education with universal reach along with other programmes like midday meals will encourages marginalised section in getting educated and it will helps to empower them by  doing away the problems they are facing. Hence improving the public education is need of the hour.
