Jan 24, 2017 Related to : GS Paper-2

Ans :

Introduction-

The word orderly is a derivative from French, it is called for a soldier, who is deputed to carry his officer’s rations and pack horses to battle. Indian army has adopted this practice from British army. Recently a low ranking soldier has complained about his routine task of polishing the shoes of his superior officer. In this background many critics are demanding to abolish this practice.

Why we need to abolish?

  • As forms of warfare changed, most modern armed forces including British army have abolished this system as it turned fighting men into personal servants of officers.
  • In orderly system, soldiers were forced to polish shoes and iron the clothes of his master, which come as a demeaning shock.
  • In India it is estimated that about 20000 to 25000 soldiers used as orderlies. If we scrap the system and induct them into frontline it will dramatically improve the morale of these men.
  • Hence India must scrap this system and bring the soldiers to frontline as it will increase the army’s fighting ability and also improve the morale of soldiers.

Conclusion-

The practice of orderly, which India adopted from British army, was abolished by British army after Second World War. Orderly brings disparity in military force and affects the morale of soldiers. Hence in the modern warfare Indian army, navy should abolish such feudal practice.
