Q. New technology by Uniper in power sector: Discuss the importance of new technology offered by Uniper Power Company.
Sep 17, 2016 Related to : GS Paper-3

Ans :

Introduction-

Uniper is a German based power producer company, and recently it has entered an agreement with India Power Corporation (IPCL) to set up a 50:50 service company joint venture, India Uniper Power Services.

Uniper, is an international energy company that offers a broad range of services with a focus on power generation and global commodity trading. It offers new technology, which would allow thermal plants to start up very quickly.

Importance-

  • A new technology offered by Uniper will enable thermal power plants to start up in as little as an hour, a fraction of the 24 hours currently needed.
  • With new technology it allows greater integration of renewable energy sources in the national electricity production system, which now runs primarily on coal.
  • Thermal plants retrofitted with Uniper offered equipment can start generation as soon as power from solar units starts to reduce with decreasing sunlight, replacing it with coal-fired electricity.
  • And it will balance power flow into the network and keep it stable. Such flexibility isn't possible in existing ones, because thermal power plants need within 24 hours to start and cannot replace a fall in solar generation at a short interval.
  • Quick starting thermal power plants would make it entirely possible to operate coal fuelled stations to produce peaking power.
  • At present, peaking-load power plants, meant to supply during the hours of peak power demand, are usually fuelled by dearer natural gas, which has its wonky logistics and supply bottlenecks.
  • And ready substitution of the costlier fuel with steam coal will reduce both the premium pricing and demand for gas. The costs thus saved need to be purposefully redeployed to reduce emissions from thermal stations and for attendant climate action.
  • Similarly there are other favourable implications going forward, for example, better grid coordination for renewable energy power and definitely it will enhance the power generation capacity in India.

Conclusion-

India is fastest growing economy, it needs huge power for its growth. In this backdrop new technology offered by Uniper will definitely enhance India’s power production, and too great extent it can fulfil India’s demand. For that we need to speedily adopt new technologies and it should proactively standardise power plants and producers.
