Q. New sanctions on Iran: Comment on ongoing tighten relations with USA and Iran.
Feb 07, 2017 Related to : GS Paper-2

Ans :

Introduction-

Recently America’s new government has fresh sanctions against Iran and branded it as sponsor of terrorism.  The USA’s measures were in response to Iran’s recent ballistic missile test and its support for the Huthi rebels in Yemen, who recently targeted a Saudi warship.

Background-

  • The bilateral relations between USA and Iran hit over allegations of acquirement of nuclear weapons by Iran, and USA has imposed sanctions against it. Following USA many European countries imposed sanctions over it.
  • Bilateral relations between USA and Iran were particularly hostile during the presidency of George W. Bush, who had threatened military action over Iran’s nuclear programme.
  • But at the time of Barack Obama, it reached out to the Iran and finally clinched the nuclear deal last year, a far-sighted diplomatic solution to a complex international crisis.
  • The deal allowed Iran to mend ties with European countries, boost its oil production and trade with other countries, thereby minimising the pain its people had suffered due to economic sanctions.

Analysis-

  • The new government of USA had put immigration curbs on Iranian citizens and imposed new sanctions on Iran and branded it as the greatest state sponsor of terrorism.
  • USA’s policy appears to pursue the agenda of restoring the bipolar balance between Saudi Arabia and Israel, the U.S.’s strongest allies in West Asia. Both these countries treat Iran as enemy.
  • The developments of new USA’s government appear that the relations between both may move on the path of hostile. It may lead to further destabilisation of west-Asia. Hence any effort to stabilise West Asia calls for Iran’s cooperation.

Conclusion-

The USA’s new policy towards Iran is worrying sign for west Asia. The cold war between Saudi Arabia and Iran led to destabilisation of West-Asia. Any hostile policy towards Iran may further destabilise West-Asia. Hence America must deal with Iran diplomatically and issues must be solved peacefully.
