Q. Mandatory exam for CBSE: Comment on CBSE’s decision to make mandatory exam for class X students.
Jan 18, 2017 Related to : GS Paper-2.

Ans :

Introduction-

Recently the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) governing body unanimously approved the proposal of making class X exams mandatory. With this board exams for Class X are set to become compulsory for all CBSE students from the year 2018. Currently it is optional for CBSE students to choose either the board exam or a school-based examination. The board exam for class 10th had earlier been replaced by Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation or CCE.

Analysis-

  • The CBSE board examinations for Class X were scrapped in 2010 and students had an option to opt for school examinations from 2011. This was done under the current Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation meant to reduce pressure of board examinations on students.
  • But, after wider criticism over students not taking their studies seriously and that lack of board examinations was poorly reflecting the quality of education.
  • In this background the CBSE conducted a survey among various stakeholders and the majority were in favour of the compulsory Class X public examinations.
  • Absence of class X compulsory exam discriminates the students of state boards. Hence compulsory exam for CBSE class X will bring uniformity in the exam pattern across the country.
  • It is expected that 80% for the Board-based examinations and 20% will be through internal assessments, which will give comprehensive evaluation of students.

Conclusion-

The earlier practice of opting for the Class 10 final examination conducted by CBSE or performance evaluation by institutions themselves was came under severe criticism. The compulsory exam for class X for CBSE students is indeed a good move as board exams were taken by students very seriously and it will also bring uniformity across the country. In this background compulsory exam is welcome move.
