Sep 03, 2016 Related to : GS Paper- 2 and 3

Ans :

Introduction-

Recently Supreme Court termed land acquisition in Singur district as illegal and void. The judgement came after a decade of land acquisition by Tata Motors in Singur district. The court found that the acquisition process was wrong in law it had not followed procedures laid down in extant legislation.

Issue-

While delivering judgment judges of Supreme Court disagreed on whether the acquisition was for a public purpose. Any gains from land acquisition like job creation, establishment of an ancillaries hub, would qualify the project as one in public purpose. Being emotive issue, land acquisition issue has been used as tool by political parties to serve their political interest.

How to solve these issues?

  • Process of land acquisition is necessary to carry out public purposes, it needs serious approach from the government.
  • They should create awareness among the people about public good and land acquisition should be compensated adequately.
  • Similarly landholders should get stakes in those projects with sharing benefits from those projects.
  • India must establish proper mechanisms and create stakeholders, instead of aggrieved land losers from the process of land acquisition.

Conclusion-

In recent times the issue of land acquisition has turned as political tool and became very sensitive issue in the political circle. For the development of country and to establish industries land acquisition is necessary, hence the issue must be dealt with serious approach. For that landholders should be given stakes in future projects and other benefits.
